When the pandemic hit us all in America, the Federal Reserve and US Government acted as quickly as they can to add a massive influx of cash into our economy. They enacted the CARES Act which set up the PPP and EIDL loans. The CARES Act also set up massive unemployment payments to those who lost their jobs. The running total so far for all of this is an additional 10 Trillion dollars in the United States economy.
Yes, you read that right. $10 Trillion or $10,000,000,000,000. That’s a shitload of ZEROs!
What does this massive number mean to you?
I’m glad you asked…
It means there’s more money floating around our economy than ever before. Many of the people collecting unemployment are making more money now than they ever made on their job. Businesses got thousands, if not millions of dollars given to them by the SBA. The average loan for the PPP was $10,000. The Average EIDL loan was $150,000.
This means people and businesses have more cash on hand than ever before in history. Which also means you have an opportunity to go on a massive cash grab yourself. There is literally money everywhere if you’re paying attention.
If you work in sales of any kind, now is the time to get busy and get in contact with as many of your prospects as you can. They have money. They are spending that money. And they will spend it with you if your pitch is good.
The key is to be dialed in on who you are going to prospect to, and how you are going to get in touch with them.
First, let’s talk about WHO you are going to prospect:
If you sell B2B, the businesses that stayed open during the pandemic are flush with cash. Most of them got the PPP and EIDL loans which means they have money to spend to grow, stabilize, and help their business. Most of the PPP money went to payroll, and it can be forgiven. This allows the company board of directors to cover payroll while spending their regular income on growth and buying up market share.
You need to identify the businesses you sell to who are still going and who didn’t get shut down during the 2nd quarter of 2020. These companies are the ones who have the most cash, a bigger market share, and are thriving still amongst the economic downturn. These are the businesses you need to go after first and focus on.
If you work B2C and sell to consumers directly, you also need to identify your prospects properly. Did they get laid off or did they stay on the job? If they got laid off, that doesn’t mean they don’t have cash. The average unemployment check was $1200/week. It’s an unprecedented time where even the unemployed are flush with cash. If they didn’t get laid off, there is a chance they got a raise due to how the PPP forgiveness guidelines were set up.
Second, let’s get clear on how you are going to prospect:
Most businesses are still working from home. This means if you usually do pop-bys or cold calls, the gatekeeper is not in the office. The gatekeeper might be working remotely from their mobile phone, instead of taking calls from the office phone. You need to find a new, creative way to contact your prospects and reach them where they can be connected with.
This is what makes social media sites like Facebook, Linkedin, and Instagram so important right now. There are over 2.6 Billion users on Facebook right now. Instagram has over 1 Billion active users. Being able to comment on your prospect’s posts or send them a DM is a huge vantage point right now. While the prospect might not be in the office, they are almost certainly using social media more than before.
We can all agree that when employees aren’t in the office, they are easily distracted by things online such as social media platforms. Use this to advantage. After all, if they are gonna be on social media, you should be there getting them to know, like and trust you, so they can make a buying decision about you or your products.
While your competition may be taking a defeated stand in the marketplace, you can step up and make more money than you’ve ever made in the history of your sales career. Don’t fall for the media hype of the sky is falling. Instead, get dialed in on who you are going after and the social media site they are hanging out on.
