One of the things that we discuss a lot as sales people is proper dress code. I mean the name of the game and Sales is dressed to impress but sometimes we can overdo it.

The way you dress as a sales person in the way you look overall as a sales person completely matters in every single deal.

If you look like 10 million bucks the customer will start to look at you like they’re part of your fortune and start to give you a really hard time.

If you look like you got drunk passed out and slept next to a garbage can last night at the prospect what trust you or give you their business.

Not this particular article I’m going to share with you some style tips for sales people but I wanna point something out that’s very important.

How are you smell matters to your prospects also. Like if you smell like cigarettes and shit sandwiches people aren’t gonna wanna be around you therefore they’re not gonna give you the time to close them.

What are the things I always do is have Listerine strips they’re little strips that come in a little tiny packet that fits in any pocket anywhere that I use Listerine mouth strips regularly throughout the day What are the things I always do is have Listerine strips they’re little strips that come in a little tiny packet that fits in any pocket anywhere that I use Listerine mouth strips regularly throughout the day

I also make sure that I have cologne and my clothes are clean and I don’t smoke cigarettes or stand around onions or microwave fish I wanna smell clean.

OK I just wanted to get that out of the way

Back to the subject of dressing right let me give an example when dressing to nice can cost you a sale.

If I go back to the finance box in a car dealership and I notice the finance guy that is drawing up my papers is wearing a 2030 $50,000 Rolex I’m going to re-review and negotiate every single thing on my paperwork.

Not because I’m some pretentious asshole but because I know that if I guy that works at a car dealership has enough expendable income to throw 20 or $30,000 away on a watch I better watch how he’s doing my paperwork because he’s hiding money in there somewhere.

Now if I go to that same finance guy who by the way is wearing slacks and a tie and a shirt because that’s typically how they dress I go to that same finance guy and he’s wearing an $8000 Rolex I won’t think twice about it.

One time I went to an investment meeting one of the host of this investment meetings about 25 years old. When I showed up to the meeting I was wearing the typical Entrepreneur uniform. Black shirt jeans and shoes no fancy colors or nothing.

This guy was wearing a $10,000 suit with a gold chain and Gucci loafers with crazy patterns on them. On top of that he had about a $20,000 Rolex so altogether his wardrobe was somewhere around 50,000 bucks.

As an investor I just couldn’t let it sit right with me that someone would invest $50,000 into their wardrobe and expect me to trust them with my cash because I would never invest $1000 in my daily wardrobe. I don’t even own a $20,000 watch literally I have a collection of Rolexes and none of them cost me $20,000.

On the flipside I wants went to an office to talk to an insurance agent the insurance agent had a band T-shirt on with jeans and sneakers I left there feeling like the guy didn’t care enough to at least dress normal in a business setting around me.

Now you make me think I’m sort of pretentious or picky asshole when it comes to house sales people dress but I’m not alone. As a sales professional I have these things in detail before.

You see the reason they call me the Hardcore Closer is because I am the master of handling objections. The easiest way to handle and get around an objection is to avoid the objection upfront

So if I know that how I look and how I smell might create objections I’m going to dress in smell correct to where those objections do not come up it’s one less conversation I have to have that gets me closer to the sale

That’s the key to sales handling objections proactively

Whether you realize it or not the way that you dress the way that your hair looks the way that you smell of the car that you drive the watch as you wear all of that matters in the eye of the prospect. If you’re doing your damnedest trying to impress them instead of close them you’re gonna get in some trouble.

So here’s the proper dress code for Sales Professional.

If you’re in a business that allows you to wear jeans you can wear nice jeans as long as they’re clean normal length not baggy or too tight but If you’re in a business that allows you to wear jeans you can wear nice jeans is long as they’re clean normal links not baggy or too tight but clean normally fashionable am appropriate.

If you wear jeans you should ask yourself what kind of shoes you should wear with those jeans sneakers should never be a thing and less you sell sneakers.

When I say sneakers I mean like hightop basketball shoes I prefer loafer shoes like vans. if I have to wear dress shoes on the job at Shipley go to a place like Nordstrom or Aldo to find something that’s fashionable yet not busy or too flashy.

What you don’t want to wear is Gucci loafers with diamond rhinestones and Christian Louboutin shoes that’s the signal that you’re making too much money off of your prospects it makes them nervous.

If you can’t wear jeans to work make sure that you wear slacks that are custom fitted you don’t wanna wear baggy pants. Even if you don’t have a lot of money it’s easy to get custom fitted slacks. You can go buy a pair of $50 slacks from Kohl’s or TJ Maxx or Ross. Then you can go to the tailor in for about $30 they’ll take in the ass measure your link and make sure that your crotch is it dipping.

You don’t wanna look like you just bought those pants for the job you want to look like the pants fit you perfectly and they were made for you.

Same thing goes for a shirt if you work in a professional sales environment you most likely need to wear a polo shirt or button up shirt I am not a fan of the tie. If you’re going to wear a button up shirt and make sure you iron it I think in this day and age for most of us suits are not a must some of you that might be a must for your job but make sure your button up shirts. If you’re going to wear a button up shirt and make sure you iron it I think in this day and age for most of us suits are not a must some of you that might be a must for your job but make sure your button up shirts are ironed   make sure your color polo shirts the colors are all popped in frazzle have those ironed as well.

Make sure that you knew comb your hair there’s too many products these days on the market not to have a good looking hair at all times. I personally use something called bed head by Tony and guy I’ve used it for years.

Lastly even if you have a beard don’t forget to shave and trim it daily nobody wants some sloppy ass beard with a bunch of crumbs in it talking to them also it just signifies that you’re willing to take care of yourself you’re probably willing to take care of your customers as well.

So dress to make an impression don’t dress to impress.
