I’ve never had a salary in my entire life. Even at a young age, working for the car wash, I was paid hourly plus commission. I’ve never experienced a “paid sick day” or “paid vacation” either. All I know is commission and creating my own paycheck.
It’s not that I wasn’t capable of settling for a salaried job. It’s that I didn’t want to ever put a limit on the amount of money I could earn. I’ve always bet on myself when it comes to making sales. I put in a lot of effort, so I’ve always wanted to get paid for my efforts.
Sure there are some benefits to working a salaried job. Guys like Harold from HR need security. Back in the caveman days, there was always some of the weaker tribe members waiting at the cave to skin and prepare the kill the leader brought back to them. Those same people’s blood lines now manage the budget and pass out written warnings at sales meetings.
Nothing compares to working in commission only sales
The rush of not knowing where your next check is coming from. And ultimately, the rush of seeing that your check is continually growing in size. It’s hard to earn more, month over month, in a salaried job that does employee reviews bi-annually. “Good luck with this year’s holiday bonus”
What I love the most about working in commission only sales is the ability to hustle up what you want. Say for example, I want to buy a new car this month. I can clearly count how many sales I need to make in order to buy that car. If I stick to the plan and make the sales I get the car.
I don’t have to save up for it, I earn up to it.
When you’re on commission, and you’re selling something you love, the sky is the limit. My first commission job was when I was 13 or 15. I worked selling car washes. The job paid $5.15/hour plus commission. My fist summer, within a month, I was out earning the manager of the location. He was on salary, I was on commission.
Once I saw that my checks were bigger than the boss’s, I knew commission is where the real money was. Even as young as 15 years old. The more sales I’d make, the better at sales I got and the better at sales I got, the more sales I made. It was a vicious cycle of awesomeness.
Coincidentally, working in sales at the car wash, got me my job selling mortgages for a broker house. A regular customer noticed my sales talent and ability to ignore objections, and offered me a job. Once I made my fist sale, a $6,000 paycheck, I was hooked and knew with 100% certainty that I’d never work for a salary in my life.
You see, when you have a company paying you a salary, they own you. They can tell you what time to be in the office, when to take a break, when you can have time off and what you can do. When you’re in sales, and you’re making the company money, they don’t care what hours you work, as long as you’re making it happen.
There’s so much more power and freedom in working a commission only sales job
When you’re a salesman who can generate your own leads, there’s no stopping you. You can dress like you want, work like you want and do what you want. Producers make their own rules, order takers on salary don’t. The MAN works for the Closer, the salary taker works for the MAN.
Think about this, the guys who are the richest in the entire world all got there from commission only sales jobs. Gates, selling microsoft. Buffett selling companies. They got to where they are by selling. If Gates had went to work for Xerox as a salary employee instead of starting and selling microsoft, you wouldn’t be reading this.
If you’re in sales, you already know what it’s like to write your own check. You’ve got the addiction, and will continue to chase the sales dragon for as long as the marketplace will allow you to. Once you’ve tasted the freedom and power that comes from a sales job, it’s almost impossible to go back and take a salary.
The only people who leave commission only sales jobs for salary jobs are the same people who spend 10 years in college, and instead of becoming an doctor, they have a phd in art. Yeah, those of the people who leave sales for salary. For the rest of us, once we get our first sale, it’s game on!
