Ever heard the saying “money can’t buy you happiness”? Of course, you have. We all have heard it 100s if not 1000s of times throughout our lives. As much as I hate to say it, the old saying is right. Money won’t buy you happiness. It can buy you pretty much everything else, but happiness must come from within.
Now before we get too into this, I want you to know I’m on TEAM MONEY. I love that shit. I always want more, can’t get enough and I’m well aware it ranks up there with air on the list of things we need to survive.
Here’s the thing about money though:
You have been told lies about money your entire life. Ever since you were young, your parents and teachers told you lies about money. They talked shit about rich people and made ignorant statements about it. This is why so many people blow all their money as soon as they get it. If money is the root of all evil, then why would you want to have it?
Money is a mindset. Yes, it’s true. Money is a shell game backed on a belief system. If you don’t have the right mindset about money, you will never get as much of it as you want. Being rich starts with the belief system you have in your head. If you don’t have the right beliefs about money, you won’t ever respect it enough to stack it in big ass piles.
We see celebrities and pro athletes burn through money like lotto winners. That’s because most of them are born poor and grew up with parents who didn’t teach them the right money mindset. As soon as they get a little money, they blow it all on shit that they won’t be able to sell off and break even or make a profit on.
Let’s be real here; buying stocks or buying into a business is not a sexy way to spend money when you come into it. Most people buy a mansion and a Ferrari. Then when the taxes on that mansion come due each year, they can’t afford it. Or when they go to sell the Ferrari they take a $100k hit at the dealership.
You can make all the money in the world and still be piss broke. I know that sounds impossible but track with me here. It’s not the money you make that counts, it’s the money you keep. I know a bunch of business owners who make $50M+ a year, but they only keep $1-2M of it because it costs that much to run their business. I also know business owners who make $5M a year who keep $3M and then take $2M and invest it, who are richer than most people with 9 and 10 figure companies.
When it comes to money, the mindset you need is boiled down to 1 sentence. “How much money can I keep and how can I grow that money I keep” When you start thinking like this, you will crush the money game and truly live a life of abundance. Until you get this mindset figured out, you’ll struggle with money no matter how much you make.
Everyone likes to shout out the top line money they make, but they hide the bottom line money. Why? Because it sounds better to say you do $2B a year in business instead of saying you make $1M a year from it in profit. Until you start focusing on the bottom line and growing it, you might as well just burn the money you make because you don’t have the right mindset around it.
Making money is an art.
Keeping money is a science.
Never confuse the two and never blow your money on things that won’t make you money. You can buy cars and a fancy house. You just gotta figure out a way to make money on them.
For example, I use my cars for marketing purposes. They make me money every day. I use my house as a tax shelter and I actually make money from my primary residence. It’s all in how you think about the money you make and the money you keep.
Get focused on the money you keep. Get focused on growing the money you got. Get rich from the right mindset.
